An overview of the pedagogical sequence for teaching the concepts of Multiplication and Division spanning 2nd through 5th grade.
Module 1Introducing Multiplication and Division 
Multiplication and Division is the next step up from addition and subtraction, and should be taught with a graduated spiral approach throughout the elementary school years. Both concepts can and should be introduced together, as early as second grade. In this module, we'd discuss how to introduce the concepts of Multiplication and Division for the first time.

Multiplication tables for 2, 5 and 10 and for 3 and 4 [link], are introduced at the second grade level. In third grade, we add the multiplication tables for 6, 7, 8 and 9 to our multiplication tool-belt.

After we learn about Multiplication of 1-digit numbers with 3-digit numbers, we’ll next go deeper into division. For this lesson, we’ll cover three objectives – mental division, introducing quotient and remainder with regrouping, and finally division with regrouping.
